This Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookie is a product of analyzing the 10-best chocolate chip cookie recipes on the internet, then averaging out all the ingredients. It's a great chocolate chip cookie.

The Ultimate Average Chocolate Chip Cookie

Chewy, crispy, tasting like toffee, blond, easy-to-make, topped with flaky salt—these are the 10 chocolate chip cookie recipes we used for our extensive cookie research here at ChefSteps.

We chose these 10 recipes for 3 reasons.1. We trust these sources. Each of these cookies was created by recipe developers, pastry chefs, or food scientists who demand the kind of quality we expect here. 2. These recipes are the most popular and best-reviewed cookie recipes on the internet (or—in one case—a technical baking manual). These are recipes that home bakers rely on when they want to make chocolate chip cookies. 3. Each of these recipes has something particular about them that makes them different. There are 800,000 tiny variations on the Toll House cookie recipe online, since it was the first chocolate chip cookie ever created. We didn’t want to test 10 versions of the same cookie. Instead, we looked at Jacques Torres’ chocolate chip cookie, which calls for a long rest in the refrigerator, yielding a much thicker cookie with richer flavor. Stella Parks’ BraveTart cookie calls for milk chocolate. The Milk Bar cookie uses nonfat milk powder, which lends a toasty flavor. And so on. In short, we wanted to test the most popular recipes, created by people we trust, that each had its own quality. We made a lot of cookies—nearly 1,000 of them in 4 weeks—for your benefit. We began with tiny variations on these 10 cookie recipes. One truth came clear in all this baking and testing: there is no one perfect cookie. Any of these recipes make a delicious chocolate chip cookie. As someone once told us, “My favorite chocolate chip cookie is the one in my hand now.” We’re not playing favorites. Instead, we used these 10 recipes as a great basis to better understand chocolate chip cookies. Also, in the process, we came up with our new favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, based on the average of each of the ingredients in these 10. A big thanks to all of the recipe developers, pastry chefs, bakers, and editorial teams out there who put in the work to publish these recipes and make them available to all of us. Our Ultimate Average Cookie is the sum total of those efforts. {activity:7AxPnb5G3ClWthLphYTxd6}
